In last week's episode of The Amazing Race, teams confronted strong winds at a paragaliding roadblock outside Ruhpoliding before driving themselves along the Autobahn to their pit stop in Salzburg, Austria. Tammy made a snap decision to run down the Rauschberg mountainside giving her and brother Victor a strong first place finish, while Linda missed a trail marker and got lost. Unable to make up for lost time, Linda & Steve were the second team to be eliminated. Nine teams remain as teams travel from Austria to Romania. Which team will be eliminated next?
Amazing Race Teams Travel Fly from Munich to Bucharest, Romania
Departing the pit stop in Austria, teams must travel by train to the airport in Munich before flying over 700 miles to Bucharest, Romania. Tammy & Victor, departing at 10:13am with nearly a two hour lead over the remaining teams, decide to book tickets before taking the train to Munich. Three flights are departing directly from Munich - a 3:20pm Lufthansa flight, a 4:45pm Tarom flight and a 9:30pm flight which will arrive in Bucharest at 12:20am. Although unable to book advanced reservations for the earliest flight, Tammy & Victor secure stand-by tickets for the Lufthansa flight at the counter.
Mel & Mike, Kris & Amanda and Margie & Luke, departing within 20 minutes of each around 12 noon, reserve tickets on the 4:45pm flight. Brad & Victoria, departing fifth, scout out a fourth option at the airport and decide to make a connection in Amsterdam, which will arrive in Bucharest twenty minutes before the 9:30pm flight. Unfortunately they miss their connection and heavy fog ground all flights for the evening. The married couple are forced to take a 9:15am flight the next morning.
Meanwhile, technical troubles on-board the aircraft require Tammy & Victor's flight to make an emergency landing back in Munich, and they join the remaining teams back at the airport. Their solid teamwork begins to unravel as they fall further back into the pack.
Contestants Perform Gymnastics Routine at National Sports Complex in Bucharest, Romania
Teams must travel to the National Sports Complex in Bucharest, Romania, former training center of Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci. At the roadblock, one contestant must "channel their inner Nadia" and complete a series of balance beam, parallel bars and floor gymnastic exercises. Amanda, Margie and Mike easily complete the tasks and continue racing. Performing the roadblock from the second flight are Kisha, Mark, Cara, Jodi and Tammy. Tammy has difficulty with remembering the gymnastic moves and communication continues to breakdown with Victor as sibling tensions rise.
Departing Bucharest, teams must travel by train to Brasov, Transylvania and make their way to Curtea Johannes Honterus-Hof in search of their next clue. The next train departs at 6:30am and all teams, with the exception of Brad & Victoria who are still stuck in Amsterdam, are on-board.
Brad & Victoria, arriving early the next morning, remain optimistic and hope that if another team has also experienced a serious set-back that they are still in the race. Victoria completes the detour and she and husband Brad make their way to Transylvania.
Team Detour at Gypsy Camps in Brasov, Transylvania, Site of Dracula's Transylvania Castle
In Brasov, teams search the grounds of Biserica Neagra, or Black Church, for their next clue. At this detour teams choose between "Gypsy Moves" and "Vampire Remains" and must either pack up and move the belongings at a gypsy camp to another location or follow a marked route to locate a locked coffin. Teams must impale wooden boards inside the coffin on stakes until finding one with a flag.
Kris & Amanda, Mel & Mike, Mark & Michael and Kisha & Jen choose "Gypsy Camps". While Kris & Amanda are first to complete the task, Kris loses his pack with their passports and money. A frantic search of both gypsy camps reveals he left it back in the wagon. Mel & Mike, finishing second, move ahead and receive their next clue directing them to the pit stop.
At "Vampire Remains", Victor mistakes a red and white marker painted onto tree as the marked path, and leads his sister Tammy up a hopeless trail into the Bucegi mountains. Tammy insists the markers are red and yellow arrows, but Victor believes he is correct and refuses to listen to her. Cara & Jaime and Margie & Luke, after several attempts by their taxi driver to get directions, join Jodi & Christie at the correct detour location.
Now at the top of the mountain and reaching a painted arrow facing both directions, Victor finally listens to Tammy as she tells him they are going the wrong way. After retracing their steps and finding the marked arrows yards away, they hike back up the hill to retrieve their coffin. Along the way, a key falls off and Tammy & Victor are left searching for a key among an impossibly large expanse of fallen leaves. Victor locates the key and the siblings complete the detour.
Pit Stop For Third Leg at Vila Panoramic, Near Historic Bran Castle in Brasov, Transylvania
After the detour, teams must take a taxi to Vila Panoramic, a mountain cottage overlooking the Transylvania castle made famous in Bram Stokers Dracula. Mel & Mike arrive first and Kris & Amanda, after locating the lost bag, arrive a close second. Kisha & Jen overcame the difficulty with directions they encountered last episode and move into third place. Margie & Luke are fourth, followed by Mark & Michael in fifth and flight attendants Jodi & Christie, for the first time in the race, finish ahead of another team in sixth. Cara & Jaime are seventh and Victor & Tammy, despite a strong head start at the onset of this leg, arrive eighth.
Brad & Victoria, unable to make up the time lost with their missed connection in Amsterdam, are last to arrive at the mat and are eliminated.
